Boys and their Balls

I’ll admit when I found out I was pregnant with my son, I was in complete shock, I mean complete shock! It literally took my breath away because I thought for sure, I was having a girl. Both my husband and my side of the family have many more females than we do males - so with that logic, I figured we were having a girl...makes sense right? Ha!
I was so excited to have a son, but at the same time, I was so nervous…I worried that I wouldn't know how to play with ‘boy stuff.’ Well, as my mom predicted, it came natural. I learned to make truck/tractor noises, how to fight like a Power Ranger, how to play Xbox, which superheroes are good and which ones are bad, that talking about boogers, poop and farting is in our daily conversations.
Fast forward, he’s now four and caught me off guard a few days ago with a question he had. Getting ready for bath time, he asked me “What are these, mommy?” And he wasn't pointing to basketballs or baseballs, he was pointing to his ‘boy parts.’ I thought to myself, ‘Why can’t he save this question for his daddy? Why me?’

I didn't have a solid answer prepared by any means, but tried my best to put it in simple terms. But how do you put such a question in simple terms?
Boy mamas that have done this before me, help! How do I answer this question? Do you say it like it is? Do you have a less descriptive way of telling him? Is there a book I can read to him? Do you have him ask his dad? LOL… help!
The next night, he took another bath, and says “Mommy, my balls are still here! Look, I can squish them!”
Ummm, I’m pretty sure you shouldn't be doing that. Doesn't it hurt?
Help! How do I explain it in terms to a four year old? :)
