Walking, Talking and Picking up Sticks

I debated writing anything about the damn pandemic we are facing now because it’s everywhere and honestly causes me anxiety, if I let it. So I’m not writing about it specifically, but instead, I wanted to write about what has come because of this pandemic.

Saturday was a rough day, all of the emotions that have been building up I finally released as I was rocking my daughter to bed and it felt good! I woke up the next morning in a better headspace and could actually think clearly.

Sunday was a better day, but my best day was Wednesday.

My husband and son went on a two mile walk while my daughter and I took a nice long nap (she’s been battling a cold, so the past few nights have been restless sleeping for her and me). And when they got back from the walk, my husband was chuckling and had to tell me what they talked about on their walk. I wanted to recap our sons topics:

1. Wanting to go to the gym when he’s bigger like daddy, so he can get strong

2. Which trees have acorns and which trees have pine cones

3. Pine trees don't like to change colors like other trees and that they stay green all year long

4. How some streets are dead end streets

5. How his legs aren’t hurting from all of the walking

6. How some puppies are mean (because they bark a lot), but Maverick (our 13 year old dog) is nice because he doesn’t bark

7. How his birthday the grass starts to turn green (his bday is Sunday) and by my birthday it starts to get warm (in May), and when it gets hot out, he will have a new sibling (in July) and he can go swimming and by his sisters birthday (in October) the leaves start to change color and it gets colder

So this evening, we went on a walk as a family - and it felt so good! We walked through puddles, watched birds fly, picked up the biggest sticks we could find, and had a few impromptu snowball fights. We talked about:

1. How brown snow is bad to eat but white snow is good

2. How his little sister is a slow walker because she has little legs

3. How some sticks are big and others are small

4. How he wants to have “basagna” (lasagna) for his birthday dinner

5. How he wants to to play Uno when we get home

These types of conversations are the best and are a great reminder to slow down amidst all of this chaos and just enjoy the time and conversations we have together.

And yes, we played several rounds of Uno last night. And probably will tonight too!

We. Got. This.
